Original Punk-ster

with 19 comments

Lately my music tastes have been going crazy. Today I had the random urge to obsess over The Distillers. So I decided to write this post.

Back in the day…like 1998 when I first started to listen to music, I liked to tell people I liked punk music. What did my punk music consist of?

Over the course of grade 3-6 the following bands cycled through my ‘punk-loving’ musical mind.

blink182

Blink 182 became my favourite band for the longest time.

green_day

I was a fan of older Green Day…until American idiot

simple-plan

Simple Plan was cool until all the 10 year old girls liked them…and I was 13.

Of course there were a few more bands but this is what I referred to as punk music. As I got older, so did my musical taste…sort of. I tried on some more classic punk music like these.

afi

Pre Sing The Sorrow A.F.I was pretty hardcore and raspy.

themisfits

The Misfits grabbed me with a few of their tracks, never loved them.

thedistillers

Finally, The Distillers whom I really liked.

After listening to these bands for a while, I realized all the raspiness and crude quality of music wasn’t to my liking. I moved on from this genre somewhat. I still like AFI, but the their more current albums (Sing The Sorrow and December Underground). The Distillers are in my opinion a great punk rock band.

the-distillers

Punk styles.

Not because I like them, or for a punk chick Brody is hot (maybe not in some pictures), but because their songs appealed to the masses and they developed quite the following. They had some popular tracks and released 3 albums.

Give them a listen. Its awesome.

This song is one of my favourites. My album of choice? Coral Fang.

feel the punk.

  1. first of all just to let you know the “original punksters” were not these bands execpt prob the misfits. see all of these bands were the first mainstream pop punk bands. See it all started with bands like minor threat, circle jerks, and bands like agent orange in the 80′s that really make punk what it is and what these bands are. of course there are bands like the sex pistols and the clash but you would know that they are not as fast as these bands.

  2. That is sick and sacrilegious to call any of these bands punk! The Misfits were with Glen Danzig. These are the bands that helped destroy what punk was. One of my bands played with the Distillers in their early days and they were ripped apart by every band that played that night. They were only fashion punk!

  3. fine. i agree. my i was simply comparing the deemed ‘punkness’ of these modern bands to the moresopunk that i listened to. i really have little punk knowledge in the areas of punk pioneers.

  4. blink 182 didnt destroy punk. second comment that was made is taking this way too seriously. he was just saying this is what he considered punk for himself not for everyone i do agree with what ser wrote but still its punk reguardless even if it isnt original to others for the second comment that was made. not that im trying to offend anyone but just saying.

  7. Ser — I would have to disagree that the early 80s punk bands ‘made’ punk.

Punk really started in 1977 with bands like The Ramones and The Dead Boys. These bands of course influenced the bands of the early 80s that you’re referring to.

  11. These are all just opinions. Don’t knock on other people’s perspective or “opinion”. As far as I’m concerned it started in the 50′s. Not Elvis or that stuff but if you look into the underground traditional 50′s rockabilly(Benny Joy, Mac Curtis, Joe Clay, and so on…). That’s where the baseline is at. They sang about participating in rebellious acts(drag racing, drinking, one night stands). For that era it was punk. Banned from the radio, most of it was. “Punk” itself came around in the late late 60′s and it was the first genre of music to flat out say “Fuck you”. Than there are the different branches of punk, “political punk”(Bad Religion 80-85), “Comedy punk”(The Dickies), “Horror Punk”(Misfits) and so on. But like I said that’s just my opinion. It’s like a damn tree, evern genre is a branch and every stick/twig is a sub-genre. As time goes by it’s just going to expand and sad to say, by the music coming out today…it’s gonna be just sad

  13. I agree with Cyberpunk, NOFX is amazing. Blink and many of the “punk” played on mainstream radio are pop-punk bands, with emphasis on pop.

If you want to hear some real (good) punk (not classic) check out Screeching Weasel, The Queers, NOFX, Pennywise.

Also, try some Ska Bands. Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rx Bandits, and Less Than Jake are a few favorites of mine.

  16. Steve,
none of the bands you like are punk. None of them. Blink 182, Greenday, distillers etc , all pop bands, and they all suck ! spiking your hair and getting cliched tatoos is not punk. Punk is an aesthetic ideology that has its roots in 1930′s Zurich (Cabaret Voltaire, the art movement, not the band).
Do yourseldf a favour, either do your homework and find out what punk is actually about, and who the originators, pioneers and REAL punk artistes were, OR fuck off and buy some britney spears albums, cos the shit you pruport to be “punk” has about as much edge and reactionary girth as any mtv daytime shit (which is exactly waht bands like greenday etc are ) !

    Regards,

    DK.

  17. DK, people like you need to take a chill pill. You’re not special for knowing the history of punk. Punk today is different than punk from those days, which I’m sorry to tell you. Deal with it.
